Marnie Weber

Lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and Milford, CT

b. 1959

Marnie Weber’s multidisciplinary practice spans performance, film, video, sculpture, collage, music, costuming, and painting. She constructs uncanny worlds that blur the distinction between fantasy and reality, venturing into the surreal landscapes of the subconscious.

Blending her own mythologies of animals, monsters, and female figures with handmade props, costumes, and stage sets, Weber crafts fictional narratives of passion, transformation, and discovery. Weaving elements of fantasy and folklore, she places women at the centre as empowered characters, creating a backdrop that transforms into a site of magic and metamorphosis.

Through an exploration of the interconnectedness of living beings, spiritualism, and the workings of the mind, Weber reveals her deep fascination with the theatrical and the performative, layering information and backstory to build a baroque richness. She creates a complexity where sentimentality, sweetness, and nostalgia are twisted into something darker. Disorienting and enigmatic, Weber’s work elicits responses that shift between melancholy and delight, attraction and repulsion, tragedy and humour.
